The University of Sunderland has awarded local business director Matty Pendergast an Honorary Fellowship – in recognition of Matty’s work in the North East’s construction sector.
Matty is director of development and construction consultancy Identity Consult, a Sunderland-based business that has doubled its workforce and turnover in the past five years; Matty has also overseen the company’s expansion into Yorkshire, Salford and Preston.
The University awarded Matty in a ceremony at Sunderland’s Stadium of Light football ground where he was praised for his commitment to creating jobs and growing a business in the region.
University representatives noted his longstanding relationship with the institution which he attended from 1994 to 1998 while also holding the role of president of Sunderland Students Union. Post-graduation, Matty also took on the role of University Governor. Speaking at the event, University Vice-Chancellor and Chief Executive Sir David Bell said: “From student, to governor, to mentor, to exemplary businessperson, we are delighted to count Matty as a friend.
“With his impressive career, commitment to future talent, and investing in young people from across the North East, he is an inspiration to those hoping to forge a career in construction.”
Matty was part of a group of directors that completed a management buyout of Identity Consult in 2018. He and his colleagues have since grown the business, creating 18 jobs this year alone. Matty is also part of a team investing in future talent, partnering with FE institutions in the region to offer jobs and training to apprentices. Speaking at the ceremony he added: “I’m delighted to be awarded an Honorary Fellowship from the University which kick-started my career. A big part of this honour is the recognition both the team and I have received from what we have achieved at Identity Consult since the buyout almost five years ago.
“I’m so proud of what we’ve achieved together – through Identity Consult and the work we’ve done as a growing SME and employer in Sunderland – we have contributed to Sunderland and wider City region economy through job creation and the delivery of multiple regeneration projects in the area.
“Receiving my Honorary Fellowship is certainly a career highlight that I’m very proud of.”
Since 2018, Identity Consult has worked on several projects for the University campus including City Space, Murray Library and Hope Street Exchange. The team has also supported PHD students in providing research opportunities and work-based placements, alongside pro bono lectures to students in the Business School specialising in career advice.
