Acklam Hall is Middlesbrough’s only Grade I listed building and dates from the early 17th century, when Acklam Hall was owned by Sir Francis Boynton and subsequently bought in 1637 by William Hustler. It remained the Hustler residence for almost 200 years until Middlesbrough Corporation converted Acklam Hall into a boys school in 1935. Middlesbrough College vacated the building in 2008 and it lay deteriorating for many years until purchased by Acklam Hall Limited.
Identity Consult were appointed by Acklam Hall Ltd in 2009 to undertake Project Management and Cost Management services to restore the building to its former glory and to include a destination restaurant, wedding venue and business incubator space.
It was a complex project with many stakeholders including Historic England (formerly English Heritage). Identity Consult played a key role in establishing and valuing the works required to restore the grade listed building with cost plans being subject to ratification by both Historic England and Middlesbrough Council Conservation team.
The project was delivered using a Construction Management contract. Identity Consult supported the Construction Manager by managing the works budget, preparing works contracts for the specialist trades and agreeing final accounts with all sub-contractors.
Acklam Hall opened in February 2016 and has developed a growing reputation as a wedding venue. Phase 2 is likely to lead to the development of a hotel extension during 2018/19.
Identity Consult played a key role in establishing and valuing the works required to restore the Grade 1 listed building back to its original state with their cost plans being subject to ratification by both Historic England and Middlesbrough Council Conservation team. They then supported the delivery of the project, assisting in managing the works budget, preparing works contracts for all of the specialist trades and subsequently valuing the works onsite. We would have no hesitation in recommending the Identity Consult team. They have specialist knowledge of these types of projects which greatly assisted the project.
