Description

The Project is a bespoke design and build new University campus building parallel to Barrows dock alongside the local BAE facilities. The build encompasses new teaching spaces including facilities for; engineering and clinical skills vocations, a café and business lounge that look over the dock and marine setting.

The Barrow campus was purposefully designed to reflect the surrounding marine environment encapsulating the shape of a submarine with the front rotunda looking out onto the dock. The ‘rusted look’ deep orange cladding contrasted with the grey panels and angled external walls were key features that were essential to the vision of the client and make for a striking impression on approach. Materials, landscaping and the lifecycle of elements as well as the aesthetics had to be carefully managed during design development and construction phases to ensure the longevity and life span for the building met the requirements of being continually exposed to a harsh marine environment.

Identity Consult were appointed at the early RIBA stages as cost consultant and were heavily involved in initial cost planning, viability reviews and whole project budgeting including fees and fit out costs. Identity Consult were responsible for collating the main contract documentation to ensure this reflected all funding requirements and associated legal parameters with the help of the University’s appointed legal team. Post contract Identity Consult were responsible for continually managing the project budget and providing detailed reports and cash flows which were presented at monthly board meetings.
