Temperance Square is new build centre which will house Redcar and Cleveland Borough Council’s East Cleveland Employability Skills and Training centre, bringing new employment and energy industry training opportunities to the local residents in the area. The centre will provide two new training rooms, interview spaces and support facilities as well as being available for community use. In addition to this there will be a new public realm area surrounding the building improving and opening up the Loftus streetscape.
The wider design team consisting of GT3 architects, Studio Horn, LEDA Engineering and Southern Green Ltd., have been working to create a scheme within budget to meet the challenges of the steep site topography and drainage requirement. They have also worked with the IC Planning team to overcome the constraint of demolishing an existing building within a designated conservation area and therefore challenging the local plan policy as part of the process.
Sustainability was a a key agenda for this project therefore a number of feasibility options were explored including the reuse and repurpose of the existing terrace housing on the present site. Various types of structure for a new build including a timber frame were also considered. A key challenge to the project design has been incorporating low carbon materials, low energy use and renewable energy technology where possible whilst balancing with the budget available from High Street Funding with the inflationary market pressures.
The scheme gained planning approval on 2nd February 2023. The works planned include a demolition enabling contract due to start on site May 2023 prior to the new build main works commencing in Autumn 2023 and finishing in 2024.
