My Journey at Identity Consult: A Work Placement to Remember

My work placement at Identity Consult has been a truly transformative experience—one that has given me an invaluable insight into the dynamic world of construction and project management. In this blog, I’d like to share a high-level overview of my time at Identity Consult, the key lessons I’ve learned, and my aspirations for the future.

Experiencing Live Projects

During my placement, I had the unique opportunity to visit live construction sites, including high-profile projects such as the Redcar Town Deal initiatives—comprising the High Street Public Realm works, the Culture & Leisure Anchor site, and the Redcar Station Project. These visits provided me with first-hand experience of how large-scale projects evolve from planning to execution. I gained a deeper appreciation of the complexities involved in project management and the level of coordination required to keep everything on track.

One of the most eye-opening aspects of these visits was observing how project managers handle unforeseen challenges. Witnessing real-time problem-solving on-site enhanced my understanding of risk management and the importance of proactive decision-making.

On-Site Involvement and Learning Opportunities

Beyond site visits, I was actively involved in various aspects of project delivery, including:

  • Redcar Town Deal – High Street Dilapidation Surveys: Gained an understanding of assessing building conditions before construction, reinforcing the importance of thorough inspections.
  • Pre-Start Site Meetings and Walks: Learned how to identify project requirements and potential risks while observing how different disciplines collaborate.
  • Stakeholder Engagement: Worked occasionally from the Redcar Council office, gaining insight into the collaboration between public and private sector teams.
  • Redcar Station Project: My first visit introduced me to station redevelopment, and I later attended monthly progress meetings to track its development.
  • Change Control Forms: Learned how to document and manage project changes effectively, ensuring transparency in decision-making.
  • Minute Taking & Agenda Preparation: Gained experience in recording key actions concisely during site meetings and internal discussions.
  • Risk Register Management: Developed an understanding of risk identification and mitigation, contributing to discussions on project risks.
  • Stakeholder Communication Routes: Assisted in preparing a document outlining the stakeholder communication strategy, reinforcing my understanding of engagement processes.
  • Project Execution Plan (PEP): Worked on PEPs, learning how they define project objectives and delivery approaches.
  • Internal Programme Benchmarking Document: Helped create a live document tracking successful project programmes, ensuring best practices were shared.
  • Tendering Process: Gained experience in managing the design team appointment process through tendering.
  • Microsoft Project: Developed project scheduling skills by working with MS Project.

Knowledge Sharing and Personal Development

Identity Consult provided excellent learning opportunities beyond project work, including:

  • Knowledge Breakfast Sessions: Attended monthly sessions covering the latest trends in construction, keeping me informed of industry developments.
  • Diary and Email Management: Developed organisational skills by managing emails and scheduling efficiently.

Social Value and Community Engagement

My placement was not just about technical learning; I also had the opportunity to contribute to community initiatives, including:

  • Coatham Primary School – Meet the Employer: Introduced students to careers in construction, helping them understand industry opportunities.
  • Mock Interviews: Assisted in conducting mock interviews to support young people in developing their employability skills.

These experiences reinforced the importance of community engagement as part of responsible project management.

A Supportive Work Environment

One of the most rewarding aspects of my placement was the supportive and collaborative work culture at Identity Consult. The guidance and encouragement from colleagues, particularly Kayleigh Fuller and Nigel Brewer, played a crucial role in helping me balance my placement with my academic commitments. Their flexibility in accommodating my dissertation deadlines enabled me to gain valuable experience without compromising my studies.

With their support, I successfully managed both my placement and studies, ultimately achieving a distinction in my dissertation. This achievement is a testament to the mentorship and encouragement I received at Identity Consult, making my experience even more fulfilling.

Beyond work, team bonding events—such as our Christmas dinner—helped foster a welcoming and positive environment.

A Memorable Learning Moment

One of the most significant lessons I learned was the critical role of teamwork and coordination in project success. During a site visit, I observed how unexpected challenges, such as supply chain delays, were effectively managed through collaboration between project managers, contractors, and stakeholders. Seeing how these challenges were navigated in real time helped me appreciate the importance of adaptability in project management.

Reflections and Future Aspirations

Reflecting on my time at Identity Consult, I feel incredibly fortunate to have gained a strong foundation in project management. I now have a clearer understanding of:

  • The importance of stakeholder engagement.
  • Risk identification and mitigation strategies.
  • The coordination required to deliver successful construction projects.

Moving forward, I am excited to continue my journey in the construction industry, equipped with the skills and knowledge gained during my placement. Identity Consult has played a pivotal role in shaping my career aspirations, and I feel confident in taking my next steps towards becoming a project manager.

Advice for Future Work Placement Applicants
